Festival Bebas Batas (which roughly translates as ‘free of boundaries’, or ‘unlimited’) will be Indonesia’s first festival of brilliant art by disabled people.

The festival is the brainchild of a group of artists, curators and activists, including artist Hana Madness, who visited the Unlimited Festival in London in 2016 and was inspired to create a festival with the same spirit in Indonesia.

Taking place at the National Gallery in Jakarta on 12-29 October 2018, the festival is designed to complement the Asian Para Games, which will be held in Jakarta, also in October.

The festival is a collaboration between Galeri Nasional Indonesia, Kementerian Pendidikan dan Kebudayaan, Art Brut Collective, and British Council Indonesia: we would all welcome more partners joining us.

Purpose

Car Free Day

“Enabling all festival and exhibition artists, from Indonesia and from overseas, to take part in the Car Free Day on Sunday, 14 October. Car Free Day happens every Sunday when Jakarta’s main thoroughfares, Jalan Sudirman and Jalan Thamrin, are closed to traffic from 6am to 11am for Car-Free Day. That is when approx 100,000 people, from joggers and cyclists to children on skate scooters, buskers, and even street hawkers throng and take over the 5km stretch of road. We would like to use the car free day opportunity to bring a piece of the festival to the public and at the same time to promote festival happenings that takes place at the national gallery.

Coordinated by l’Institut Français d’Indonésie in partnership with Gerkatin.
